What truly sets him apart is his dedication to fitness. From surfing to competing in triathlons, Loftus’s passion for an active lifestyle has become an integral part of his identity and daily routine at age sixty-three.
Born and raised in Jacksonville Beach, Kurtis Loftus has always had a deep connection to the ocean. Surfing became a natural extension of this bond, providing both a physical challenge and a meditative escape. His love for the waves is not just about the thrill but also about maintaining a healthy and balanced body and mind.
“I considered myself at a physical disadvantage in my youth. I was undersized and had medical issues that really challenged keeping weight on and feeling confident. So, I surfed a lot and pursued athletic endeavors like distance running that were mentally, physically, and spiritually important to my well-being. I knew at a young age that I could manage my overall health through physical activity so I chose exercises that could be with me throughout my life,” says Loftus.
Paddling through the serene waters around Jacksonville Beach offers him a unique way to stay fi t while enjoying the area’s natural beauty. Navigating through winding creeks and exploring coastal marshes, paddle boarding allows him to combine his love for adventure with his commitment to staying fi t. Loftus’s dedication doesn’t stop at water sports. Having been married to his wife Margaret for forty-one years, he is also passionate about his family with two daughters and four grandchildren. Acknowledging a dysfunctional childhood, Loftus had hoped to always be a good husband and father, but it was not always a smooth road. He feels like the more years he has on this earth, the more opportunities he will have to the best example to fulfill that hope.
“I spend time with my grandsons as if I have the energy of their fathers but my place is to simply be the best grandfather they will ever meet.”
As an artist, Loftus has left a significant mark on the community. He is the founder of Deck the Chairs, an annual holiday light sculpture exhibit featuring lifeguard chairs decorated by local artists and organizations. The event draws thousands of visitors and raises funds for charities, highlighting Loftus’s dedication to giving back to his community.
