Criminals posing as utility workers are increasingly using deceptive tactics to gain access to people’s homes, putting people, especially seniors, at risk of theft, fraud, and personal harm. Authorities across the country are warning homeowners to stay vigilant against this fake utility worker scam, which continues to rise in frequency and sophistication.
These imposters often dress in uniforms, carry fake IDs, and may even arrive in vehicles with official-looking logos to appear legitimate. Once at the door, they may claim they need to “check the meter,” “inspect a gas leak,” or “test your water pressure.” In some cases, one individual distracts the homeowner while an accomplice enters the home and steals valuables.
“They look official, but their goal is simple: get inside your home under false pretenses,” says a spokesperson from the Better Business Bureau.
Victims often report feeling pressured, confused, or unsure how to verify the legitimacy of these visits. This scam disproportionately targets older adults who may live alone or be more trusting of people in uniform.
Tips to Stay Safe:
Don’t open the door to unexpected utility workers. Ask them to provide identification and the purpose of the visit.
Verify independently. Close and lock your door, then call your utility company directly using the number on your bill, not a number the visitor provides.
Don’t allow access without confirmation. Legitimate utility workers rarely need to enter your home without prior notice.
Call 911 if something feels off. If the visitor refuses to leave or becomes aggressive, report it immediately.
Utility companies typically notify customers in advance of any required home visits. If someone shows up unannounced, it’s OK to be skeptical.
“Trust your instincts,” says local law enforcement. “If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.”
By staying informed and aware, you can protect yourself and your loved ones from this growing scam. Always think twice before opening your door and help
spread the word to others in your community.
