Are you getting ready for the annual summer visit from your favorite grandchildren? Here’s a short list of budget-friendly suggestions to help keep money in your pocket and your little ones out of the heat.

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens

The Museum offers year-round opportunities for all ages and levels of experience. Learn something new, take a class, attend a talk, join a tour, or simply spend time together in the galleries and gardens. The museum is closed on Monday’s and daily hours of operation vary. Admission is free on the first Saturday of every month, the second and third Tuesday night, and the fourth Friday of every month.

Kingsley Plantation

Explore the historic waterfront property that dates to the mid-1700s. Established during Florida’s plantation period (1763-1865), Fort George Island was owned by many planters. The site name comes from one of those families. Anna and Zephaniah Kingsley lived here from 1814 to 1837. A visit to the area provides an in-depth education as part of the National Park Service.

Traveling Tales Kit

Traveling Tales are a collection of convenient book bundles and activity kits for preschoolers, ages two to five, that you can take home! Get your preschoolers ready to read and ready for school with help from the Duval County Library. Materials for each theme are contained in a sturdy bag and can be checked out at no cost with your library card.

Home Improvement Store Kids Workshops

Lowes & Home Depot Kids Classes: Turn the trip into a family fun event for the young members of your crew, including the Kids Workshops with specially designed project events for little builders. Kids can use a real hammer, play with paint, and get an official store apron while building something creative. Contact your local store for a calendar of classes and additional information you may need. Be sure to register in advance as spots fi ll up quickly for both stores.
