There’s no love, quite like a mother’s love especially when it comes with a side of southern comfort. Somehow, our mother’s cooking had a way of sticking to our ribs and our hearts. We asked a few people to dish about their favorite meals made by mom to share some love for Mother’s Day. Here’s what they had to say:

My mother’s kitchen was the heart of our home. A plate of her fried porkchops, mashed potatoes, and stewed cabbage could cure just about anything. She’d season those chops like only a Southern woman could, crisp on the outside, tender on the inside. Her mashed potatoes were whipped, and that cabbage. Simmered low and slow. It wasn’t fancy, but it was so good. Every bite tasted like home, like tradition passed down in cast iron and Sunday stories.” – Liz Haynes McKenzieJacksonville/Tallahassee

My mom’s lasagna was something else,” says Mike Amato. “She used this old family recipe with layers of homemade noodles, rich meat sauce, and fresh ricotta. She always added just a pinch of nutmeg, which made it special. It would take her all day, but the smell in the house was unbelievable. That lasagna wasn’t just dinner. It was family, tradition, and comfort all rolled into one. I’ve had plenty since, but nothing ever comes close to hers.” – Mike Amato Ponte Vedra

Chicken and dumplings could fix anything, a bad day, even a scraped knee. She didn’t use recipes. The broth was a bit rich, the dumplings lumpy, and the kitchen always smelled amazing. To this day, I can remember one bite taking me back to that little kitchen. I miss her, and her cooking. – Joe Lyle Jacksonville Beach
